Mr Nick Beresford-Cleary is a highly experienced consultant spine surgeon who practises at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and King Edward VII Hospital.

Mr Beresford-Cleary specialises in both elective and emergency spinal surgery, treating conditions such as degenerative disc disease, disc prolapse, spinal stenosis, radiculopathy, spinal trauma, spinal oncology, and adult spinal deformity. Taking a patient-centred, evidence-based approach, he emphasises shared decision-making and offers both surgical and non-surgical treatments, including spinal injections, decompression, lumbar discectomy, fusion, and minimally invasive surgery.

As Clinical Lead for the Oxford Metastatic Spine Service, Nick is actively involved in research into spinal metastatic disease as well as other sub-specialist areas. He also co-directs the Oxford Spine Surgery Fellowship and co-authored an FRCS candidate textbook. His training includes a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College London, a medical degree from Edinburgh University, and specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in Oxford. He undertook fellowships in paediatric and complex adult spine surgery in Oxford and Vancouver, as well as an academic attachment at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. With extensive experience in robotic and navigation-assisted spinal surgery, he integrates advanced technology into his practice to enhance patient outcomes.

A recognised expert in spinal surgery, Nick regularly speaks at national and international conferences and contributes to research aimed at advancing surgical techniques and improving patient care.

As part of Thrive4Life’s trusted network of specialist speakers, Nick recently joined us for a lunchtime talk on "Back in Action: A Surgeon’s Guide to Pain Prevention and Spinal Health." In this in-depth session, he explained common causes of back pain, how everyday habits like poor posture affect spinal health, and why early action is key to avoiding more serious issues. From simple desk adjustments to knowing when to seek professional help, Nick shared practical, evidence-based tips to help attendees protect their spines, reduce discomfort, and stay productive at work.
